Updating Employee Manager Access for Professional Development Pro™ (Company Administrators)

The Professional Development Pro feature enables you to assign a primary approver, a secondary approver, and a reimbursement reviewer for each Professional Development Program. Often, an employee’s manager is designated as the primary approver, but you have the flexibility to assign the Employee Manager or different individuals to any of these roles.

Please note: The Professional Development Pro feature must be included in your Compt service plan to assign an Employee Manager to approve Professional Development Program requests. Please reach out to your dedicated Compt CSM or support@compt.io if you do not see the Development Admin tab on the left sidebar when you log in to your Compt account.

Assigning Employee Managers

If you choose the "Employee Manager" option for assignment, please ensure the correct manager is assigned to each employee in Compt. This ensures a smooth approval process and accurate routing of requests.


You can update these assignments in three ways:

  1. Individually
  2. Via bulk upload
  3. Through the Rippling API (We may also support other APIs—reach out to your dedicated Compt CSM or email support@compt.io for more details.)

When selecting "Employee’s Manager" as an approver or reviewer for Professional Development requests, please ensure the following:

  1. The manager is listed as the employee’s manager in their Compt profile.
  2. The manager has the appropriate role permissions to approve or review requests.

To update a manager’s assignment or role permissions, follow the steps below for individual or bulk upload updates.


1. Individual Updates

1. Click Stipend Admin or Expense Admin on the left sidebar and select Team.

2. Locate the Manager you want to provide approve or review access to on the Team List and click Employee Name. Click on the Compt Roles Tab and check the Employee Manager role. Click Save Changes, and they will have the selected access assigned immediately. 

  1. To assign the manager to a specific employee, locate the employee on the team list, click the checkbox next to their name. Next, Click Actions and Assign Employee Manager. Select the manager that should be assigned to the employee in the drop-down and click Confirm Assignment. (Only managers who are assigned the "Employee Manager" role in step 2 will appear in the drop-down)

Please note: If you also use the Compt Business Expense module, the manager assigned in this field will be the same one that is used for business expense approvals.

2. Bulk Upload Updates

  1. Click Stipend Admin or Expense Admin on the left sidebar and select Team


  1. Click the Download Team List (CSV) button on the top right-hand side of your screen.


Update the below columns on the downloaded team list.

  • compt_is_employee_manager

    TRUE or FALSE should be listed for each employee in the list.

    • TRUE = A manager that should be given Employee Manager access to have the ability to review and approve requests submitted through the Professional Development programs (or Business Expense) module
    • FALSE= An employee that will not be assigned as a manager to review and approve requests submitted through the Professional Development (or Business Expense) module


  • compt_employee_manager

    Input the Employee Manager's e-mail address to review and approve requests submitted through the Professional Development Programs that they are assigned to (or Business Expenses).



  1. After updating the spreadsheet, save it as a .CSV file and click Upload Team Info to upload the updates.

  1. The updates will then be added in Compt, effective immediately. You are now ready to launch your Professional Development Program!
