How to Customize Taxable Category Descriptions (Company Administrators)

Admins can customize the description text that Employees see for taxable stipend categories on their My Stipends page in Compt. This allows companies to provide clearer guidance about what a category covers or how it should be used.

By default, Compt provides standard descriptions for taxable categories. However, Admins can replace this text with company-specific language so Employees better understand the purpose of the stipend and what types of purchases are eligible.

Custom descriptions are managed in Company Settings and can be updated at any time.


OVERVIEW

In Compt, stipend categories may include a short description that Employees see when viewing their available stipends. For taxable categories, Admins can override the default description with custom text.

Custom category descriptions help:

• Clarify what the stipend covers

• Provide examples of eligible expenses

• Set expectations for Employees before they submit a claim

These descriptions appear on the Employee My Stipends page. Below you will see an example of the default descriptions that are set for employees.


WHEN TO USE

Use custom category descriptions when you want to:

• Provide clearer instructions for Employees

• Replace the default taxable category description

• Add company-specific guidance for how a category should be used


BEFORE YOU START

Before creating a custom description, make sure:

• You are logged into Compt as an Admin

• The stipend category already exists

• You know which taxable category you want to update


HOW TO

  1. Log into Compt.
  2. Click Stipend Admin.
  3. Click the Company Settings tab.
  4. Scroll to the Custom Category Descriptions section.

  5. Click New Custom Description.
  6. Select the taxable stipend category you want to customize.

  7. Enter the custom description text that Employees should see.
  8. Click Save.

The updated description will now appear for Employees on their My Stipends page.


WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Once the custom description is saved:

• Employees will see the updated text when viewing the stipend on their My Stipends page

• The default description will no longer appear for that category

• Admins can return to Custom Category Descriptions at any time to edit or update the text


TROUBLESHOOTING

Custom description option not visible

Make sure you are accessing Company Settings from the Stipend Admin section. Only Admins have permission to manage category descriptions.

The description is not showing for Employees

Confirm that the correct stipend category was selected when creating the custom description.

Q: Does this change the stipend rules or eligibility?
